Second Hand Flowers No. 2

Second Hand Flowers No. 2

Second Hand Flowers is a concept I want to explore a lot more in depth. The works consist of abstracted flower arrangements, their colours and shapes are becoming disfigured.

I like breaking them down into their two distinctive parts;

The Flowers.

Second Hand Flowers to me refers to a beautiful and thoughtful gesture that feels both intimate and impersonal. The flowers were never intended to reach me and be gifted to me but here they are, taken from one context and being forced into another, in which they do not belong. This concept brings a sense of melancholy to the collection of works, but in an honest and quiet way, like a subdued emotional state that also brings a sense of comfort. These are flowers being passed along as an afterthought.

The Frame.

The paintings are held in thrifted frames, ones that have served their original purpose, and then discarded. We don’t know the history of these frames, where they came from or what made them so significant to someone else. I don’t try to thrift perfect frames, but it’s the ones that sit with scratches and chips out of them. They are the ones that can hold these works and concepts the best.
